Rather than take down George Bush with smug cheap shots, political scientist Charles Fergusons terrific No End in Sight, first released in 2007, simply attacks with the facts. Now, its available on YouTube, without interruption and with all its upsetting insights intact. Its methodical, incisive dissection of the Bush administrations myriad stupidities leading up to the Iraq war make for that rare contemporary documentary that worries less about its entertainment value than building a convincing argument. 'Sopranos' mini-reunion in 'Mourning'

Lorraine Bracco, Jamie-Lynn Sigler to star in comedy

Lorraine Bracco and Jamie-Lynn Sigler will star in the satirical indie comedy "Son of Mourning," marking a "Sopranos" mini-reunion.

Bracco and Sigler will play the mother and love interest, respectively, of a disaffected ad copywriter (Joseph Cross). When he returns home to deal with his parents' divorce, the locals mistake him for a spiritual savior who will deliver them from the world's climate crisis. Heather Graham also stars.

Writer-director Yaniv Raz's feature debut is shooting in Florida. Cross also is making his producer debut on the film, with Moritz Borman serving as exec producer.

Bracco is repped by Innovative and One Entertainment. Sigler is repped by UTA and Untitled.

Gregg Goldstein reported from New York; Borys Kit reported from Los Angeles.

Bloco Electro, Global Beatbox Part 1

After playing to an estimated worldwide audience of 55 million people opening Live Earth, you would assume that you would recognise the gentlemen and lady behind BlocoElectro. Forming part of the SOS All-Stars, the drumming super group of 40 members, led by Roger Taylor of Queen, the band are slowly making the transition between support slots to the main attraction.

Global Beatbox Part 1 is a curious collection of electronic and hip hop-tinged dance, compromised of solely percussive based sounds. Largely influenced by the sound of Brazilian drumming groups (Bloco) and fusing the distinct rhythmic patterns with both Latin and other world beats, BlocoElectro have a sound that is like a thousand holidays rolled into one.

The emphasis is very much on the 'Global' throughout this album, with inspiration gained from just about anywhere you care to mention. Echoes of India, Africa and the Middle East all feature but each influence never sits incongruent to another and each sound seems to meld seamlessly into each other in this international melting pot.

While African Beat also retains a progressive feel with the use of more synthetic drum sound, it is tracks such as Afro Cuba which mesh together the international influences in perhaps the most organic way. By merely allowing these percussive sounds to meet without any electronic intervention, they combine to make the most interesting noises on the album.

Whereas keyboards, decks and loops are usually the staple of most dance music, the lack of such tools does not hinder the sound produced by BlocoElectro. It is perhaps, by not falling into the trap of other bands which use these fusion techniques by layering loops and such to infinitum, that the band retain a rather fresh and uncluttered sound.

Although this album isn't rewriting any of the rule books or trying to punch through any boundaries, it is still a relatively accomplished collection of interesting sounds. After gaining a fan in the shape of Annie Nightingale and having secured a slot on the BBC Introducing tour, you are bound to hear a lot more of this band in the near future.

No black velvet Elvis, but 'bad painting' exhibit opens at Austrian museum

VIENNA, Austria - Two blonds with bulging bosoms. A child crying next to a decapitated doll. A man with pipes protruding from his face.

That's just a sampling of intriguing images on view in the Austrian capital that all share the same label: bad painting that makes good art.

Curators of the new exhibit at Vienna's Museum of Modern Art, or MUMOK, say the phenomenon began in the 1920s and is represented in works by celebrated 20th century artists such as Rene Magritte, Francis Picabia, and Georg Baselitz.

"They challenge their medium by using a range of incorrect, bad or ugly approaches in order to attack and criticize it by its own means," a panel tells visitors entering the exhibit.

"Bad Painting - good art," which opened Thursday, takes the viewer on a fascinating tour of occasionally in-your-face creations, such as a seemingly severed and bloody foot by Baselitz, dated 1963.

There's also a large piece of fabric inscribed in black lettering with a dozen lines of German insults by Sigmar Polke, titled "Cloth of Abuse," from 1968.

In the exhibit's catalogue, MUMOK director Edelbert Koeb calls the show "the first major historical overview of a phenomenon which has undeservedly received little attention to date, offering a new, differentiated view on the history of Modern and Postmodern painting."

Particularly compelling are several works by Asger Jorn, who bought nondescript paintings at flea markets - then added his own touch.

One such image, frequently reproduced, is titled "The Avant-garde Does not Give up" and features a girl in a cream dress clutching a jump rope. The viewer is immediately drawn to Jorn's changes, which include a minute moustache and hint of a beard on the child's face.

"Cabbage" is the name of another painting modified by the Danish artist. It depicts a woman posing in an elegant off-the-shoulder evening gown, her face completely shrouded by Jorn in what could be described as a multicoloured mask.

MUMOK press material explains that Jorn, toward the end of the 1950s, considered his "modifications" as a way of recognizing the value of kitsch, which he referred to as "bad painting."

Works by bad painting's so-called father figure, Picabia, are also on show. The museum describes him as an artist who, already in the 1920s, espoused jumping from style to style as an alternative to the earlier avant-gardist belief in linear progress in art.

One striking Picabia image, dated 1935, shows the face of an attractive woman completely covered in small dark spots.

The museum says artists hardly ever used bad painting continuously but rather let it shape certain periods of their careers.

"Bad painting is a strategy that no artist has followed consistently throughout his entire career, but rather deployed during specific phases as a way of opening up new possibilities for the medium," Koeb wrote.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 12.

Aditya Chakrabortty on Utsavam, a new exhibition of music from across India

Ladies' Day Returns To Theaters

Even the box office estimates for the opening weekend of Warner Bros.' Sex and the City turned out to be too conservative as the film earned a million and a half dollars more on Sunday than studio executives had reckoned. The film took in a total of $56.9 million for the weekend, substantially ahead of Paramount's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which brought in $44.8 million in its second week, pushing its gross past the $200-million mark to $215.6 million. The No. 3 film, Universal's horror flick The Strangers, also performed better than expected with $21 million -- more than what the film cost to produce. In fourth place, Iron Man appeared to have legs of steel, as it brought in another $13.5 million after five weeks. Rounding out the top five, Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian added $12.7 million to its gross in its third week.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date): 1. Sex and the City: The Movie, Warner Bros, $56,848,056, (New); 2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Paramount, $44,754,615, 2 Wks. ($215,635,899); 3. The Strangers, Universal, $20,997,985, (New); 4. Iron Man, Paramount, $13,541,264, 5 Wks. ($276,166,336); 5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Disney, $12,704,545, 3 Wks. ($115,362,725); 6. What Happens in Vegas, 20th Century Fox, $6,681,097, 4 Wks. ($65,904,971); 7. Speed Racer, Warner Bros., $2,259,031, 4 Wks. ($40,677,371); 8. Baby Mama, Universal, $2,194,320, 6 Wks. ($56,117,805); 9. Made of Honor, Sony, $1,913,035, 5 Wks. ($42,878,354); 10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Universal, $1,059,840, 7 Wks. ($60,485,980).

Britney Spears - Spears Hits London For New Video

BRITNEY SPEARS' former manager LARRY RUDOLPH has confirmed the star will be hitting the streets of London to shoot the promo for her upcoming single RADAR.

The Toxic star is set to film the video in the British capital next week (beg09Jun08), and is determined to get her career back on track by taking a director's role on-set.

Rudolph tells the New York Post , "The theme is her and her girlfriends are going to be looking all around London trying to find a boy who she met in a club. Every time they think they have him, it's someone else.

"She will be behind the camera as much as possible; she wants to make sure it's exactly right."

In April (08) Rudolph, who was reportedly dismissed by the singer after he joined her parents in forcing Spears into rehab last year (07), told reporters how the star is gearing up to make a triumphant return to the charts, saying, "She's in an amazing position for a comeback right now. She could end up being the biggest comeback in history."
